What is actually going on with the BMW Z8?
11/18/2022
Recently, we have noticed that many people are obviously interested in the BMW Z8 (again?). We can see this in the frequency of demand for advertisements. A good reason to take another look at our auction database and analyze how the Z8 has fared at auctions over the past almost ten years.
A total of 76 transactions are listed and a sale was achieved in 72 percent of all cases. This is not a bad rate.
If you plot the sales price along the time axis and superimpose a trend line over it, things look really good for the Z8 at first glance. After a slight dip, prices seem to have risen in recent years.
However, the picture looks different if you count in francs rather than euros, as prices have tended to fall since 2018.
Of course, this has everything to do with the changed exchange rates; after all, it is currently cheaper for the Swiss to shop in the USA than it was a few years ago.
It has to be said that these apparent price fluctuations also have a lot to do with condition and auction location. Carefully summarized, one would probably simply conclude that the BMW Z8 was hardly influenced by market trends and made its way steadily.
Of course, the Z8 is not really rare, with over 5000 examples produced. But you don't see it on every corner either, simply because there was only one Z8 and a directly comparable car was not built by BMW before or since.
Loyal owners can confirm that the Z8 is fun to drive. And we are not aware of any insurmountable maintenance problems. Seen in this light, nothing should stand in the way of a continued smooth performance in the future.
Incidentally, we already dedicated a driving report to the Z8, which was built from 2000 to 2006, two years ago, to which we hardly need to add anything.
