Happy Birthday Walter Röhrl!
03/07/2022
One of the world's best and most likeable drivers is celebrating his 75th birthday today and we wish him a very happy birthday. He won the Monte-Carlo Rally four times in a row, he drove a private and inferior Ford Capri as a newcomer to the competition, he distanced the US competition by laps in the rain in an IMSA Audi, he was everywhere and always fast, even when the fog prevented visibility.
His sayings are and remain legendary and, most importantly, he always kept his feet on the ground. He had no airs and graces and was always there for everyone, everywhere.
He still keeps himself physically fit today with mountain biking and ski tours and says that although he has virtually no "ailments", the number 75 alone makes him wonder. He still drives 50,000 to 60,000 km a year in cars. Always fast, of course, but not too fast. He only had one private accident 25 years ago, when a Ford Taunus overlooked him when turning left and hit him. His car went up in flames and the damage amounted to DM 540,000. He was test driving a Ferrari F40.
But he also thinks that driving is less and less fun, as around 80% of people can't drive. Many are distracted by their cell phones or simply daydreaming, and at the traffic lights they need 30 seconds to drive off when the light turns green. "That makes me furious!"
He doesn't think much of electric cars: "I can't spend hours at charging stations in my old age."
Dear Walter, the "zwischengas team" wishes you a very happy birthday and that you don't have a single problem in the future!
