Is this the future?
10/19/2020
While the corona figures are apparently rising again everywhere, "Speedweek" took place in Goodwood at the weekend. It was actually more like three days, but it contained everything Goodwood is famous for: thrilling races, shootouts and great starting fields. The event was certainly a highlight of the historic 2020 racing year.
But somehow it all felt a bit like a video game. And without an audience, the Goodwood Circuit also seems sterile.
Of course, there were exciting races and spectacular scenes on the circuit. There were surprises, such as when an actually old Nissan was able to leave much younger GT racing cars in its wake.
And for the racing drivers, it all worked out. "Motor sport in its purest form," said one of the racing drivers during the interview. He had driven a wide variety of racing cars during the weekend, from a Mini to a modern GT racing car. And he obviously had a lot of fun.
Whether the audience sees it the same way is another question. The races are definitely more impressive and exciting on site, and a YouTube stream simply can't compete with that.
Let's hope that real normality returns soon ...
