Interesting cars from the early sixties that we can barely remember
10/18/2020
Hand on heart, would you have recognized the sports car pictured here straight away? At first glance, it looks like a Ferrari from the early 1960s, but the wheels reveal that this is a simpler vehicle.
It is in fact a Berkeley Bandit from 1960, although only two of these were produced at the time, as the company went bankrupt too early to be able to sell them in large numbers. It would have been an interesting car with an overhead cam Ford engine, independent suspension all round, front disc brakes, plastic bodywork and low maintenance costs. But it was not to be. And so the Berkeley Bandit is one of those cars that hardly anyone remembers.
Yet it was only 60 years ago that it was presented with much fanfare.
This is also true of many other more or less promising cars that were sold in the early 1960s. And yet they were soon forgotten again.
While we can of course remember the VW Beetle or the various models from Opel, DKW, Fiat, Alfa Romeo or Mercedes, we have a much harder time remembering less common factories.
We have dived deep into our archives and unearthed lesser-known cars from the early sixties. They come from more than a handful of countries and cover a wide variety of designs. And now we want you to try to identify the vehicles in our new car connoisseur quiz number 98. Take part! It's fun and you can celebrate a reunion with something long forgotten.
