Has the value of classics really changed that much?
An MG TD from 1951 could be bought in 1970 for DM 5500 in 1A condition, a Maserati 3500 GT Spyder Vignale from 1962 was available for DM 14,500. If you convert that into euro prices, the values are almost halved.
EUR 7500 for one of the sought-after Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Spyders, and in freshly rebuilt condition to boot? Yes, that was advertised in AMS in issue 13/1970, and the list could go on and on. Many stories make and made the rounds at the regulars' tables: "In the early seventies, I could have bought a Ferrari 250 GTO for 12,000" or "there was a gullwing for 20,000".
In fact, the prices of classic cars have risen rapidly in recent decades. But sometimes people overestimate these changes. And sometimes it's hard to remember how high prices actually were just a few years ago.
This prompted us to publish a slightly different car connoisseur quiz. We have compiled the ratings for 16 classic vehicles as they were published around 20, 10 or 5 years ago. In order not to make it too complicated, we always used the Condition 2 ratings from Classic Data. Are you still able to identify the approximate value at that time?
