Opel GT electric again
02/29/2020
It was in 1971 when Georg von Opel reached 190 km/h with an electrified Opel GT. To achieve this, he had to carry no less than 760 kg of batteries and two DC motors that together produced 120 hp (or 88 kW).
The record-breaking Opel weighed 1530 kg and reached 188.86 km/h for the flying kilometer and 126.89 km/h over 10 kilometers, as Automobil Revue reported at the time. However, Georg von Opel did not get very far despite the huge batteries.
Around 50 years later, we take another look at an electric GT at Retro Classics in Stuttgart, converted by Gerald's Garage on behalf of the company Antriebstechnik U. Mittnacht.
The modifications to the original GT are significantly smaller and yet the result is likely to impress with its significantly better performance.
A drive power of 100 kW (approx. 136 hp), a battery capacity of 36 kWh and a range of around 240 km are specified. The finished Opel GT electric (pictured above) is said to weigh 1090 kg, which is only 110 kg more than the standard gasoline engine.
Only the typical Opel whisper of the four-cylinder engine is likely to be missing, but this has obviously also been taken care of, as the installation is to take place in unchanged installation spaces. So there would be nothing (little) standing in the way of a deconstruction.
You can see the future Opel GT Electric in Hall 5 at Retro Classics in Stuttgart, which runs until Sunday (March 1, 2020).
