Fast ahead with front-wheel drive - 90 years of DKW racing cars
02/11/2020
Nobody from the car industry or the classic car press wanted to remember the ninetieth anniversary of the DKW racing cars, so the small private museum for Saxon vehicles in Chemnitz took up this topic. A special exhibition was officially opened on February 6, 2020 (press and celebrities were present). This special exhibition is now on display until October 4, 2020.
A DKW racing car from the post-war period from the West is unfortunately missing, no one was willing to provide a vehicle, so there are only pictorial reminiscences of the rally and formula racing events with DKW vehicles on display.
A planned but never completed DKW racing car from the early GDR was not finished in time, but the car will be on display shortly.
But there are also some impressive exhibits, for example:
- Two DKW F1 monoposto racing cars (as used in ice racing, for example)
- DKW racing car with a streamlined body by Freiherr von König-Fachsenfeld, which he used in record-breaking races and also set world records
- DKW F2 with self-built sports bodywork
- Framo Stromer Cabriolet
- DKW F5 sports car
- DKW PS600 sports car with charge pump engine
- DKW pedal car for children
- Self-built DKW sports car from the GDR
- DKW F8 special racing car
- DKW F8 racer by Jacob Lauer
The exhibits are complemented by trophies, winners' wreaths, special tools and literature.
The exhibition is not only impressive for those interested in the history of DkW racing, but is also worth a visit for any DKW or racing enthusiast.
In addition to various lectures, you should make a note in your diary of the brand meeting "DKW meets IFA - A meeting for 2, 3 and 4 wheels", which will take place on the museum grounds on May 3, 2020.
