The groundbreaking Cisitalia 202 SC Coupé and the Porsche 356
10/09/2018
The current exhibition "PS. I love you" at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf begins with the Cisitalia 202 Berlinetta designed by Battista "Pinin" Farina back in 1946. The car is actually too old for the exhibition, which actually focuses on sports car design from the 1950s to the 1970s. But the Cisitalia was groundbreaking. This is immediately apparent in the exhibition when you compare it with the early Porsche 356 standing right next to it.
Barbara Til, the exhibition curator, says: "Compared to the Cisitalia, the Porsche 356 appears somewhat baroque, as the body overhangs very much due to the narrow track of the VW chassis. Especially when you see the two vehicles side by side, you recognize the modernity of the Pininfarina design, while the outstanding feature of the 356 body designed by Erwin Komenda is the flat, flowing silhouette, with emphasis on the rear section, which is still recognizable even after 70 years."
In keeping with the Porsche maxim that you can steal with your eyes, Erwin Komenda has adopted the small crease of the Cisitalia above the center bar of the windscreen.
An extensive report was dedicated to the exhibition on Zwischengas.
