Fiat Panda more valuable than a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing?
When Professor Tumminelli, a well-known car expert, explained during his lecture at the " Avant Premiere" of the "Grand Basel" that he considered a Fiat Panda to be significantly more valuable than a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, there were a few astonished looks on the faces.
After all, it is difficult to compare a car that was produced in its millions from the 1980s onwards with an exclusive super sports car from the 1950s. You can still buy an early Panda today for a few thousand euros or francs, if you can find one. A 300 SL usually costs over a million, but it can be found at almost every major auction or in the major marketplaces of the specialist press.
The fact that a Fiat Panda is something special was recently confirmed to me once again by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who is more or less the father of the cute little car. In any case, the Panda was worth a lot to him, because he could really start with a blank sheet of paper when it came to design. Hardly anything was defined, except that the car had to be economical and inexpensive to produce, have maximum interior space with minimum dimensions and low weight, and have a tailgate and a versatile, convertible interior.
The result probably exceeded the expectations of almost everyone involved, even if the Fiat Panda was not really a beautiful car. But it transported millions of people, served as a handyman's van as well as a pizza delivery vehicle, a vacation vehicle or for mail delivery in the Alps (as a 4x4). Seen in this light, the Panda was of great importance to mankind, more so than the gullwing, which only a few could afford.
