When cars still had real on-board tools
Everything used to be better! It's not uncommon to hear this phrase in classic car circles. But of course it's not always true. When it comes to on-board tools, however, things really used to be better. While nowadays even the cross wrench for changing a wheel is missing if only the tire inflator is still available, decades ago cars were still equipped with many wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and other useful tools.
Of course, the on-board tools were tailored to the type of car, so they had wrenches of the required size.
And so you could actually carry out small repairs yourself, such as refitting a hose or changing spark plugs.
BMWhad made a habit of storing the extensive range of tools inside the trunk lid. This was a practical solution because, unlike in other cars, you didn't have to clear out the trunk first to get to the keys and screwdrivers.
But there were also other practical solutions, such as the box on the engine cover of the Renault5 Turbo (top picture).
