When cars were still for driving
04/26/2017
Sometimes you have to marvel at what people do in their cars these days. No wonder, after all, they are sitting in a moving telephone box, an air-conditioned retreat or music box or even a massage parlor thanks to modern seating technology. It's easy to get distracted. And why shouldn't you make a phone call - after all, half of all new car buyers will soon have a hands-free system.
Of course, things used to be very different, at least when you sat in a rustic sports car. There was a steering wheel, three pedals, a gearshift and a few control instruments that you really needed. That was it. Neither the Lotus Eleven nor the Devin Triumph( see picture) were good for anything other than driving. Concentration was automatically the order of the day, as well as driving pleasure, because anyone who was so intensively involved with their vehicle was probably also enjoying it.
Do such bikes still exist today? To some extent, yes, but if you want to go as rudimentary as Devin or Lotus, then you have to look far into the exotic segment, because even a Porsche Boxster or a Lamborghini Huracan today offer entertainment electronics and hands-free sets, ApplePlay and Internet access. It's probably mostly the British who remind us of the era when cars were just for driving with small series vehicles ...
