Even 60 years ago, people were sensitive to noise, which is why Firestone presented the tire with the new "Super-A-Silent" compound.
Unlike today, however, the aim back then was not to get to grips with rolling noises, but with the "shrill screeching" when cars were driving fast through bends. This meant that the Firestone could be driven silently, i.e. without tire squeal, in the corners, while the tire was just as loud (or quiet) as its competitors on the straights. However, people didn't notice this because the other noises of a car (engine, exhaust, air turbulence) were significantly louder at the speeds usually driven.
