Batteries last longer than you think in classic cars/youngtimers
10/31/2016
The battery quickly becomes one of the problem centers in vehicles that are rarely moved, which is the case with most classic and vintage cars due to the long winter period. Deep discharges can lead to the early death of the energy donor. Batteries often only last a few seasons. Some regular battery buyers are happy if they last four years. However, battery technology has improved and thanks to accessory chargers, it is now possible to keep the battery in good shape over the winter.
With a" question of the week" we wanted to find out how long batteries last today, and we were surprised.
10% of respondents said that their battery had been in service for more than ten years. Two thirds of classic/young car owners considered a service life of five to nine years to be quite realistic (21% reported five, 26% six, 18% up to ten years).
11% reported that a battery would work for four years, 5% for three years and 3% for a maximum of two years.
Less than two years is obviously the absolute exception.
On average, it can therefore be assumed that according to the experiences of Zwischengas readers, a modern battery in a classic/youngtimer can be expected to last around 6.3 years. Not bad and certainly better than expected!
The analysis of the answers looks like this in detail:
The evaluations of the previous questions of the week can all be read in a dedicated topic channel.
And the next question of the week has already been asked. This time it's about whether classic/young car drivers winterize their cars with a full or empty tank.
