The British Leyland Zanda - trend-setting, but without a future
In 1969, British Leyland presented a bold concept car at the Earls Court Motor Show in London, the British Leyland Zanda. The innovative thing about this vehicle was not primarily its shape, but the way in which it had been created, namely through the use of computer-aided design. What is commonplace today was almost science fiction back then.
The Zanda was also intended to showcase the expertise of British carmakers and coachbuilders, but was only available to admire as a plastic mock-up in green.
The British car market was in a bad way at the time, and the mass manufacturers in particular were suffering. The Zanda, which was seen as a GT car and potential successor to the MG B, never made it past the concept car stage and was soon more or less forgotten.
