Toyota and its sports cars
03/11/2012
Toyota will be taking part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans again this year for the first time after withdrawing in 1999. Toyota is not really known as a sports car manufacturer, although they presented the Toyota 2000 GT at the Tokyo Motor Show back in 1965.
Now the GT 86 is making its debut in Geneva, the world's only sports car with a front-boxer engine and rear-wheel drive - but not the first. That honor goes to the Toyota Sports 800 with a two-cylinder boxer engine, which was developed from 1962 onwards.
The beautiful 2000 GT was an in-line six-cylinder coupé and was replaced by the Toyota Celica in 1971. Rear-wheel drive and in-line six-cylinder engines also characterized all four generations of the later Supra model series. The MR2, the first mid-engined sports car, was then introduced in 1984.
Obviously, Japanese TV is still very fond of the 2000 GT, as the presenter points his thumb upwards before he ...
kneels down and explains the design elements of the car.
You can find out more about the few historical retrospectives at the Geneva Motor Show in the corresponding report.
