Datsun - a name returns
03/24/2012
Nissan recently announced that it is launching a "low-cost car" and plans to sell it under the well-known name Datsun in three countries - Russia, India and Indonesia - from 2014.
The first Datsun was launched in Japan back in 1930. It was the Datsun 10, a small car with 495 cc, which was very similar to the Austin 7. The best-known Datsun was probably the"Z", one of the most successful sports cars ever as the 240 Z, 260 Z and 280 ZX.
The end of the brand name "Datsun" was announced in 1981. The Japanese decided to only offer their products under one name and so they settled on "Nissan". After the Second World War, the name "Datsun" was mainly used as an export name for fear that the name "Nissan" would be too closely associated with the armaments company in America and thus cause sales difficulties.
In 1981, a good 30 years after the end of the war, the name change was no longer seen as a problem and, in addition, it was possible to save advertising costs with just one brand.
