Porsche racing car rarities under the hammer
03/03/2012
Only rarely does such an exquisite collection of rare Porsche racing cars come onto the market. On March 9, 2012, Gooding & Company will auction off the Drendel family 's collection at the Amelia Island Auction . 17 vehicles built between 1973 and 1997 will go under the hammer.
From the 1976 Porsche 935, a works Group 5 racing car in Martini livery, to the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo (above), to the 911 GT1 Evolution, they all represent important eras in Porsche racing car history and they all have at least one turbocharger.
The Porsche 917/30 from 1973 is also turbocharged, which at the time meant up to 1,500 hp depending on the steam wheel position and accelerated the CanAm racing car, which weighed less than 1,000 kg, to 96 km/h in 2.1 seconds. It was probably the most powerful Porsche racing car of all time.
Of course, the two 924/944 derivatives from 1980 and 1981 were also turbocharged, as was the Porsche 962 from 1984 and the same model from 1985. The 911 GT 1 Evolution from 1997, the latest vehicle in the collection, could also count on the additional power of the turbine.
As if all these trouvailles - the collection also includes two formula cars and various road vehicles - were not enough, the auction lot list also includes a Porsche 550/1500 RS Spyder from 1955 and a Porsche Carrera 6 with chassis number 906-159, which competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1967 and was then sold to Porsche dealer Otto Zipper.
With an estimated price of USD 1.0 to 1.25 million, expectations are high for this 906, but the Porsche 917/30, which is expected to fetch USD 3.25 to 4 million, has been estimated even higher.
A total of 81 vehicles will be tempting bidders to lighten their bank accounts on March 9. In addition to the Porsche vehicles already mentioned, the 1948 Tucker 48 movie car and a 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupé are also up for grabs, but "normal" vehicles such as a 1957 Ford Thunderbird, a 1962 Porsche 356 and a 1972 BMW 2002 tii also feature in the auction catalog.
If you don't want to bid on site or over the phone or don't have the necessary petty cash, you can at least look forward to a comprehensive and richly illustrated auction report on Zwischengas.
