Driving pleasure is (almost) free of charge
02/23/2012
These days, classic car magazines and even business journals are full of reports about classic cars with the potential to increase in value and return considerations in connection with classic vehicles.
However, it is often forgotten that the real purpose of an automobile is to get around and that the real pleasure comes from driving it. However, driving pleasure has little to do with the value of the vehicle in motion. Even small and inexpensive vehicles can produce a great deal of driving pleasure. Just think of the Renault R8 (pictured above), the Ente or the quaint English MG TC. Driving pleasure can be measured neither in horsepower nor in dollars. It simply requires the right attitude and the most "intimate" (and tangible) approach to the technology. An attractive world of noise helps just as much as the sun on your neck or an unobstructed all-round view.
You should think about this the next time you read auction records. Only a few of these award-winning and top-selling vehicles are ever really enjoyed on the road, or can you imagine driving to the ice cream parlor or around the block in a Porsche 911 S costing over a million or a Ferrari California weighing four million? An Opel Kadett Coupé or an Alfasud is much more practical and at least as much fun to drive.
You can read more about the Renault R8 and why we fell in love with it in the vehicle report published a few days ago.
