Rare Morgan collection auctioned by Bonhams in Paris
02/03/2012
Every year at the beginning of February, the classic car scene meets in Paris when the Rétromobile calls. This year, two auctions invite/invite you to spend money. Last night, on February 2, 2012, it was Bonhams ' turn with the"Paris Sale", offering a varied program.
What caught our eye was a whole collection of rare Morgan vehicles that Froilan Gisbert had sold as part of a "rationalization" of his collection. Three- and four-wheeled, round and flat radiator models, the various designs with vintages spanning almost the entire creative period of Morgan up to 1967 - it is rare for such a composition to be offered at auction.
The seven vehicles, which are also shown in this blog in order of age, achieved the following highest bids (before knockdowns and sales):
- Morgan F4 Sports from 1935 (three-wheeled): € 10,000
- Morgan 4/4 Drophead Coupé from 1939: € 18,000
- Morgan 4/4 Sports from 1947: € 31'000
- Morgan Plus 4 Drophead Coupé from 1954: € 25'000
- Morgan Plus 4 Sports from 1958: € 34'000
- Morgan Plus 4 Competition Roadster from 1962: € 40'000
- Morgan Plus 4 Drophead Coupé from 1967: € 27,000
In view of these prices, some Morgan fans might well be annoyed about a missed opportunity. However, it should be noted that only one of the seven Morgan cars (the last one) was sold directly. The bids for all the others were obviously too low. Whether a "deal" can still be found after the auction remains to be seen.
We will of course provide a detailed auction report on the Bonhams auction at a later date.
