Volkswagen celebrated the five millionth Volkswagen Beetle at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show. Depending on how you count, it had taken a good fifteen years to reach this proud number.
About twenty years later, on February 25, 1982 to be precise, another anniversary was celebrated at the Volkswagen plant. The five millionth VW Golf, a diesel, rolled off the production line.
After just eight years of production, VW boss Dr. Carl Horst Hahn was able to proudly announce this success, which was celebrated in a much more professional manner than the Beetle anniversary in 1962.
The Beetle would eventually reach over 22 million, but the Golf has long since passed the 25 million mark and there is no end in sight.
