Project 114 - Not revolutionary enough

The Frégate almost had a successor and the R30 a predecessor. From the end of 1959, Renault created a classic notchback sedan with a 2.2-liter six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. However, company boss Pierre Dreyfus found the concept of "Project 114" too ordinary (and, after advanced development, also too expensive). The project was called off at the beginning of 1961 and the prototype designed by Michel Beligond was never shown to the public. The public only saw it in 1972 at the exhibition "Ces Renault que vous n'avez jamais vues", sprayed white from top to bottom. Only two thirds of the light-alloy engine went into series production: shortened to four cylinders, it powered the Renault 16 from 1965.
