The super icon - Steve McQueen's Porsche 917 from the movie Le Mans
Sometimes everything just comes together. In this case, the Porsche917 , one of the most famous racing cars of all time and a two-time Le Mans winner, and Steve McQueen, one of the most charismatic actors of all time. McQueen was not only a good racing driver, he loved racing and in 1971 he poured this affection into what is probably the best racing film of all time: Le Mans.
And the car that was so important in this movie will now be auctioned by Mecum in January 2025.
Steve McQueen bought this Porsche 917 K directly from Porsche and used it for his film "Le Mans". Apparently, the original engine is still in chassis 917-022 and of course it is painted in the typical Gulf colors of the time.
Whether this car is really the most important Porsche of all time and "the most collectable" of all remains to be seen, but it doesn't get much more "iconic" than this.
The car has already been shown as an appetizer in Monterey. An estimate has not yet been given, but you don't have to be a clairvoyant to predict that USD 20 million will probably not be enough ...
