Summary
In 1977, Pontiac presented a revised Firebird, the most powerful version of which, the "Trans Am", had a 6.6-liter V8 engine. Although the coupé was not suitable as a dragstrip racer, it was all the more suitable for leisurely gliding along the highway. And after the movie "Smokey and the Bandit" at the latest, half the world knew about the car. This vehicle report briefly tells the story of the Firebird model and shows a 1978 Trans Am in current pictures and its brothers in historical footage. A sound sample is also included.

Preview (beginning of the article)
The movie "Smokey and the Bandit" (title of the German version: "Ein ausgekochtes Schlitzohr") was a box office hit and made a car world-famous that actually had its best days long behind it, the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Burt Reynolds was the name of the then very popular actor who played the truck driver "Bandit" in the movie and distracted the police from a beer-smuggling semitrailer truck (Kenworth W900A) with his black Pontiac Firebird for a bet. Hot chases, a ride-along wedding bride (Sally Field) and hearty dialog characterized the 96-minute film, which was shot for just USD 4.3 million (including fees) and grossed almost eighty times that amount in 1977.
