In the mid-sixties, Pontiac had a two-seater sports car waiting in the wings, which, under the name Banshee, did not find favor with GM management because the threat to the top dog Corvette was too great and the market niche was probably too small. This report looks back at the development history and also shows the indirect successors of the Pontiac Banshee.
In 1968, the Opel of the average citizen had just 45 hp, but its corporate brother GM/Pontiac had the Pontiac Firebird 400 with 330 hp. The magazine 'hobby' was able to test one of the first cars to reach Europe and came to the conclusion that less was more. The recommendation was to drive with six rather than eight cylinders, at a lower cost and with more driving pleasure. This report reproduces the original wording of the test at the time and explains why Heinz Kranz recommended less rather than more. The report is supplemented by archive photos from the time and a review of three generations of GM Firebird with gas turbines, which gave the Pontiac its name.
In 1977, Pontiac presented a revised Firebird, the most powerful version of which, the "Trans Am", had a 6.6-liter V8 engine. Although the coupé was not suitable as a dragstrip racer, it was all the more suitable for leisurely gliding along the highway. And after the movie "Smokey and the Bandit" at the latest, half the world knew about the car. This vehicle report briefly tells the story of the Firebird model and shows a 1978 Trans Am in current pictures and its brothers in historical footage. A sound sample is also included.
The third and second-last generation was first delivered in 1982. Its trademark was definitely the folding headlights. The early models became particularly well known through the Knight Rider
