If you want to write an article about the Pontiac Firebird, you first have to outline its history. The Pontiac company was around for a while. But at the very beginning there was an Indian chief, Chief Obwandiyag of the Ottawa to be precise. This "Pontiac" was the leader of the Pontiac Uprising against British colonial rule in North America (1763-64), which failed. Despite his defeat, his name would be remembered by future generations in a very different context. Pontiac was probably born as a car manufacturer in 1908, the year in which the Oakland Motor Company merged with the Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works Company to form the Oakland Motor Car Company. One year later, General Motors became the majority owner. Between 1908 and 1926, however, the company produced cars exclusively under the Oakland name.
