Autonomous driving 60 years ago?

A very dashing Mercedes-Benz 600 comes around the corner here. Two people sitting in the car, one in the front passenger seat and the other in the back seat? At least that's what it looks like at first glance. So early attempts at "autonomous driving"? And is it due to the slow computer technology that the car has to be forced into the bend too late and so harshly?
It's all an optical illusion. In fact, the test driver simply yanks so hard on the steering wheel that he almost ends up with his upper body on the passenger side.
