The new Mercedes 220 S of 1959 - a star among stars
Summary
The newcomer from Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz 220 S, could do everything better. At least that's how it sounded throughout the test report in the magazine 'hobby'. And the people at 'hobby' didn't make things easy for themselves and put the new model through its paces. This report reproduces the original wording of the 1959 test and shows the pictures from that time, as well as many factory photos from the period.

It may have been six months ago that I wanted to ask a Mercedes-Benz test driver about 'the new one'. I wanted to do it very cleverly, reminded the man of our old friendship and was hopelessly rebuffed. "I can't and mustn't give anything away," was the reply, "as a former colleague at the company, you should understand that better than anyone." - I was forced to understand and must have made a very sad face. But it was apparently due to this corpse-bitter face that something jumped out of this short interview that was more important and essential at the moment than the entire profile of the vehicle:"I can tell you something: You know how passionate I used to be about driving. Now, with the new one, driving has become even more enjoyable. You'll notice that for yourself when you take the car for a permitted spin on the Solitude circuit on day X. It's incredible how it runs, handles and brakes - neither of us have ever experienced that before!"
