While driving along the north coast of Iceland, reader Walter Fischer spotted a signpost on the side of the road with the promising inscription "Automuseum". Of course, a classic car enthusiast on vacation can't resist. Unfortunately, at the end of the signpost was not an air-conditioned brick building with expensive gems from the 1930s, but a damp meadow somewhere between a car recycling facility and a visitor parking lot at the "Wacken Open Air".
Or as reader Fischer put it: "Hundreds of vehicles of all kinds, from rust heaps to wrecks to possibly still drivable." A turn of events somewhat reminiscent of the Barbie Museum from Jerry Zucker's comedy "Rat Race". However, the wild mix really does have a few interesting combinations in store. Where else can you find a Princess 1800, a Moskwitsch 403 and a Pontiac Grand Prix from 1988 side by side, quietly watched by a Renault F6 and a Saab 96?
The 1956 Opel Caravan seems to have caught one of the more comfortable outside seats. Fortunately, the corrugated iron hall in the background of some of the pictures suggests that at least a few exhibits are allowed to lead a more sheltered existence. The opening hours for this year are unfortunately already over, but this mainly limits the availability of coffee and refreshments. The museum in Hofsós will be officially open again from June 1 to August 31, 2024. Come and have a look.
