E viva Mexico at the Grand Prix Historique in Monaco
05/15/2022
The 13th Grand Prix Historique de Monaco takes place this weekend. Free practice is already history, as is Saturday. One driver-car combination in particular caught our eye. The ex-Pedro Rodriguez BRM P153 from 1970, provided by Hall & Hall, is driven by Esteban Gutierrez.
Born on August 5, 1991, Esteban drove in F1 with Sauber and Haas from 2013 to 2016, scoring six world championship points and a fastest race lap in Spain in 2013. He later competed in Formula E and the Indy Car Series. Since 2018, he has been working for Mercedes as a simulator driver on the one hand and as a test driver in Formula E on the other.
Here in Monaco, he is now driving the car of his compatriot Pedro Rodriguez, who was killed in an accident at the Norisring in 1971. Pedro was not only in the Porsche with Siffert, he and the Swiss driver also ended up as team-mates at BRM. The Mexican had an accident in a Ferrari 512M driven by Herbert Müller and just one year later, Siffert also met his death by fire in a BRM. Pedro Rodriguez's brother Ricardo, who was two years younger, also made the leap into Formula 1, where he drove five races for Ferrari, finishing fourth in the 1962 Belgian GP. However, he also died on November 1 of the same year in a Lotus in Mexico.
The Rodriguez brothers, but above all Pedro, were considered the most successful Mexican racing drivers until Sergio Perez.
P.S. Of course, we will soon be submitting a complete photo report from the 13th historic Monaco Grand Prix ...
