Dream cars and when they were still affordable
05/04/2022
When we were young, our dream cars were called Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari 308 GTS or Lotus Esprit, perhaps also Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 or Porsche 930 (Turbo). They were all far too expensive for us to imagine owning them ourselves one day. For everyday use, we aimed for a VW 1600, a Ford Fiesta or an Alfasud. These cost perhaps a tenth of the dream cars mentioned, used they were even cheaper and simply affordable in a world where leasing was still something for companies.
However, if you didn't shy away from sacrifices, saved everything and could perhaps live at home, you might still manage to put enough money aside to buy a used Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini dream car. In any case, I can remember a colleague who made his dream come true and bought a Countach.
At certain times, it wasn't all that expensive, as vehicle advertisements from "auto motor und sport" from 1993 show, advertised in DM, which was later converted into euros at a ratio of almost 2:1.
And today? The dream cars quickly cost seven-figure sums, are 20, 50 or even 100 times more expensive than the average consumer's car and saving money would be useless to get closer to a Bugatti Chiron or a Pagani Zonda.
But perhaps owning such a car would also be much less enjoyable than it was back then (see also the blog "Are dream cars still dream cars?" ) ...
