Golf as a popular sport?
03/18/2021
In 1974, Volkswagen launched the VW Golf and of course the Volkswagen marketing people tried to sell it to men and women with catchy slogans. One of these slogans was "The new popular sport: Golf".
The text then read:
"If golf was previously only a sport for the top ten thousand, it is now becoming a national sport on four wheels. Because golf is the new car from VW. But that's not the only reason why it has every chance of becoming a popular car. The other things it has to offer are also impressive. Because it has a transverse engine and a long wheelbase, the Golf has a spacious interior. It can comfortably seat five people. Its luggage compartment holds 350 liters, which can quickly be increased to 700 liters. All it takes is a few simple steps. Its modern engine puts 50 or 70 hp on the road, as desired. Despite this, its fuel consumption is only 8 liters normal (DIN). In the 50 hp version. So Golf is no longer a pleasure that leaves you out of pocket ...".
And yes, back then the Golf was available from DM 7995 (basic model ex works), which (not adjusted for inflation) would be the equivalent of just over EUR 4000 - those were different times.
That's what the whole advertising motif looked like, where the people somehow look like they were copied into the photo afterwards:
