Classic car buyers are prepared to pay more for manual transmission cars (Question of the week)
While manual transmission was still the norm in the 1960s, this changed increasingly from the 1970s onwards. Expensive and luxurious vehicles in particular were often equipped with automatic transmissions, and from the 1990s onwards, sports drivers also wanted to change gears like Formula 1 racing drivers, i.e. with paddle shifters on the steering wheel and without moving their foot.
Today, cars with manual gearshifts are often no longer available, even for good money.
Preferences have changed, however, with many classic car buyers now preferring a manual four-, five- or six-speed gearbox to an automated or automatic gearbox because it promises more control and involvement. But would classic car and youngtimer buyers today pay more for the transmission variant that was once cheaper?
We tried to find out with a " question of the week" . Over 320 readers responded to "How much more do you pay for a manual gearbox".
18 percent said they would pay up to 20 percent more for a manual transmission version.
28 percent said they would pay at least 10 percent more.
29 percent ticked the option that they would pay at most the same amount for a manual version.
Finally, according to the survey, only 11 percent would pay less for a manual version than for the automatic alternative.
However, 14 percent said that none of the answers matched their preferences. With 45 respondents, the question naturally arises as to what the background to this could be. Perhaps the relevant classic cars are not even available with different transmission variants or a manual version is generally out of the question.
If you neutralize these 14 percent and focus only on the remaining 86 percent, then the proportion of those who would be willing to pay more for a manual transmission would be 54 percent!
In general, however, it can be said that this survey also shows a preference for manual and foot-operated gearboxes.
