Basically, you simply need a semi-circular hole in the body so that you can fit a wheel under the mudguard. So it's no wonder that the wheel arch usually imitates the shape of the wheel, with a little air in between.
However, designers have always come up with more interesting solutions and it is not uncommon for the wheel arch to give the bodywork that special something. Gandini, for example, was known for his special shape of the wheel arch, as can be seen on the Diablo (above, would you have recognized it?) or on the Maserati Quattroporte of the nineties.
