Comparative advertising
03/07/2026
Comparative advertising was never really popular in this country; in some places it was even banned. But Volkswagen decided to pit the VW Derby against the competition. In the end, the little backpack Wolfsburg was able to distinguish itself with impressive data, especially its trunk capacity.
515 liters fit into the rear of the Derby, which the Opel Kadett (468 liters), Ford Escort (454 liters), Fiat 128 (420 liters) and Simca 1000 (270 liters) could not match.
Volkswagen also showed this visually, but you have to look twice to see that they didn't just recolor the Derby. Did the cars really all look so similar back then? Only the Simca with its "frunk" (front trunk) is an exception.
They didn't stop at the luggage compartments, they also compared the drive concepts. Also beautifully drawn. And attractively labeled
In the meantime, they have all largely disappeared from our roads, the Kadett C is probably seen more often today than a VW Derby, which we would actually like to see again ...
P.S. There is of course also a brochure on the VW Derby in our archive, but without comparison pictures.
