Saving at the wrong end - Skoda 110 in the (historic) test

How good can a car be if its only selling point is its extremely low price? In 1964, Skoda launched the 1000 MB, built in the newly constructed Mlada Boleslav plant, hence the MB in the model name and the number 1000 for the displacement class (988 cc/40 hp). Since 1964, Skoda has sold over 3000 cars a year in Germany. In 1968 there were 3301 new registrations, in 1969 there were 3514 and would have been even more if the factory had not had delivery problems. Compared to the big competition, these are small figures, for example Daf had 8525 cars here in 1969 and 6683 the previous year. But Skoda is the only brand from the East that has achieved any significant success in our country and has been able to set up a network of dealerships. Around 350 mostly small dealers and workshops represent Skoda in Germany. However, the distribution is uneven. Some active dealers have made the brand well-known in their area, while in other areas you hardly ever see a Skoda. It has never been a progressive model, nor has it become one now. It was born outdated. It had taken too long to prepare. Skoda was still using the Renault Dauphine as a starting point when considering the functional model, but designed the 1000 MB from scratch, larger and more spacious.
