The joy of detail
10/30/2020
Cover pages like those of "auto motor und sport" in the early 1960s would be unthinkable today for a consumer magazine that wants to sell significant numbers of copies at the newsstand. At least that's what publishers think. And they probably have good reasons and plenty of statistics to prove it.
However, almost 60 years ago, people obviously still felt that the headlights of a Fiat 2300 or the cockpit of a Jaguar E-Type were interesting enough to convince readers to buy the magazine.
Aesthetically, these covers were certainly convincing. But they showed little of the actual content of the magazine. It is also important to note that the magazines back then were much thinner and filled with fewer different hot topics than today.
Nevertheless, we would be interested to know whether our readers would give a magazine that only shows an interesting detail of a car on the cover a chance at the newsstand ...
