Petrol station romance
01/27/2019
It is probably one of the most famous petrol stations in the world, or rather it was. It was called Aurora and was located in Andermatt, in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. James Bond (Sean Connery) stopped at this very petrol station to let his passenger Tilly Masterson (Tania Mallet), pictured with the rifle case, out of the car. The photo was taken during the filming of the James Bond 007 movie "Goldfinger".
Petrol stations have always provided a wonderful backdrop for filming. They used to stand outside and defy the snow (as in the photo of Samnaun in 1970) ...
... or they were almost invisible, like the Shell petrol pump in Les Verrières in the Swiss Jura, photographed in 1927.
The BP filling station looks completely different from a city perspective, taken in Zurich in 1952.
We would like to thank ETH Zurich, which has already digitized over 400,000 historical photographs, for the photos.
