The colors of today and the impact on tomorrow
The old sports car stands out among modern vehicles, not least because of its red color. Red, on the other hand, is not particularly popular for new cars. In fact, 3 out of 4 cars in Germany in 2018 were sold in the non-colors white, grey and black, as "Auto Motor und Sport" recapitulated in its annual review in issue 3/2019.
The current color preferences have multiple effects on classic cars. Even when old cars are bought, modern color preferences often win out. So it may well be that a gray Ferrari 512 BB is worth more than a yellow one.
And in the future? There will hardly be any colored classic cars from the years 2000+, as preference was given to shades of grey for new cars. Really green cars are hardly sold these days unless there is a factory promotion associated with them. But if old cars in bright colors are in demand in 20 or 30 years' time, then some people might be annoyed that they opted for black, white, grey and the like for fear of poor resale opportunities.
