Why modern cars today can never be as much fun as the vehicles of yesteryear
As we all know, traffic is getting heavier and heavier, and speeds on the roads are becoming ever lower and more closely monitored. At the same time, modern cars are becoming ever stronger and faster, taking over more and more of the driving work. Can this still be really fun? Does the driver of a modern car still really feel satisfaction when he has covered a distance?
In the old car, this feels completely different, because even supposedly simple procedures are often a (minor) challenge. Shifting smoothly from one gear to the next, for example, is a pleasure even at low speeds. Downshifting (with intermediate throttle) with a clean connection and butter-smooth engagement of the lower gear makes the corners of your mouth go up.
A perfectly negotiated bend or a speedy start-up maneuver - fun is guaranteed. Even when the engine idles smoothly after a perhaps bumpy start, when the choke can be pushed back, when the four or six-cylinder unit sounds clean, this makes the owner happy.
In modern cars, these things are hardly noticeable, everything is simply too perfect. And the electronic gimmicks distract from the actual driving process.
But well, the old vehicles are still around ...
