Gulf, an unforgotten brand that has (almost) disappeared
10/26/2016
"Gulf" is a brand that almost everyone knows. And most people also know that it is, or was, an oil company. In fact, hardly anyone has ever filled their gas tank with fuel at a Gulf filling station in recent decades, yet the brand has remained in people's memories without any significant marketing efforts (Chevron took over Gulf in 1984, after which the filling stations disappeared in this country).
The reason for this is the racing cars that still appear in Gulf livery at historic races today, as well as old film classics such as Steve McQueen's "Le Mans".
And even the fans of the racing drivers of the time help to keep the brand in memory when they paint (or stick on) their Porsche 911 or Mazda MX5 in the colors light blue and orange.
The wonderful advertisements that appeared in American magazines, for example, are also unforgettable.
The pictures shown here are from such advertisements from 1968, and we have compiled Gulf racing cars and advertising subjects in a picture magic series. Enjoy!
P.S. By the way, in some countries you can fill up with Gulf gasoline again today, e.g. in the Netherlands.
