Summary
When almost the entire car industry in the compact class had already switched to transverse front engines with front-wheel drive, Mazda presented the 323 with rear-wheel drive in 1977. Despite its classic layout, the compact Japanese car was able to impress with modern technology and score points with low prices. Today, these cars have practically disappeared from our roads. This vehicle report tells the story of the first Mazda 323 and shows it in current and historical pictures.

And Mazda? In 1977, they presented the 323 with a tailgate, longitudinally mounted front engine and rear-wheel drive. They swam against the tide, so to speak, and not even without success, but not for too long either. The 323 (Type FA4) presented in 1977 was actually a stopgap model to bridge the gap until the 323 with front-wheel drive, developed in collaboration with Ford, could be launched on the market.
