Preview (beginning of the article)
In 1963, Mazda presented a sports car with a Wankel engine, called "Project L402A", at the Tokyo Motor Show. This was the world's first sports car with production intentions to feature a twin-disc Wankel engine. In 1967, the car went on sale as the Mazda Cosmo 110 S, but almost exclusively in Japan. In the early 1960s, Felix Wankel's rotary piston engine was regarded as the technology of the future in engine construction. Despite significantly fewer parts, especially moving parts, and comparatively small dimensions, Wankel engines achieved high performance values. This meant that the rotary piston engine design principle seemed capable of replacing the conventional petrol engine with pistons that moved up and down in the medium term. NSU, Felix Wankel's employer, and a whole series of car manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, Citroën and Mazda, set about developing vehicles for this new generation of engines.
