The confounded center of gravity
09/24/2016
The Lotus91/S from 1982 was doing well at Spa when a technical problem stranded it. However, the historic Formula 1 car could not be loaded at the first attempt.
As is customary today, the monoposto was lifted by the roll bar, but instead of floating upwards in a balanced manner, the rear lowered while the nose went up and the gearbox began to drag on the ground at the rear. The owner/driver hung on to the front suspension, but his strength wasn't enough and he screamed "down".
So the marshals started again. On the second attempt, two people sat on the front suspensions to balance out the mass that was obviously concentrated in the rear. In the Formula 1 cars of the eighties, the driver sat extremely far forward, so logically the roll bar had also moved far forward.
The second attempt then worked, the Lotus got onto the truck and could be transported away.
A few days ago, we published a comprehensive report on the Spa Six Hours race weekend with plenty of pictures .
