A bit of tennis for once ... and the SL
09/11/2016
Do you still remember past eras of tennis? Mercedes-Benz USA came up with an entertaining TV commercial for it. And it was elaborately filmed. Roger Federer was hired and in the two-minute clip he plays a tennis player (sic!) in various decades of the last and current century.
The whole film is structured in the style of a television report with a narrator in the studio. It all begins in black and white, when aristocrats still dominated the tennis world, and Federer's character fits in perfectly.
And he sits down in a red Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster.
It continues with the tennis heroes of the late sixties. So Federer wears his hair long and once smashes a tennis racket in anger ("bad boy era").
And he poses naked on a sheepskin in front of a pagoda for a magazine.
Then, in the seventies and eighties, more fashion came into tennis, clothes became more colorful, hair accessories more creative. But Federer now receives an R107 (500 SL?) as a prize.
And he makes calls with a giant cell phone.
Finally, the switch to the present, where Federer is of course driving the new SL. "Excellence lasts forever and when you achieve it, you become a timeless legend," comments the narrator.
This video, which Federer certainly enjoyed shooting, is funny and beautifully made, and if you look closely, you can see a few other old cars in the background.
If you can't see the video (on your phone, for example), you can find it here directly on Youtube.
