This also used to be possible without an electric motor

It wasn't that long ago, but today hardly anyone can imagine opening the sunroof by hand, i.e. without electrical assistance.
In the past, a relatively delicate hand crank was enough to crank the roof backwards without any great effort. There was no need for an instruction manual, as everyone was able to assign the function of the crank handle, whereas today you have to understand the labeling of the individual buttons in order to find the right one to open the sunroof.
In any case, the mechanism was lighter than its descendants; today's large glass roofs (also known as panorama roofs), for example, add around half a hundredweight to the already modest basic weight.
