His Munich friends affectionately called him "Straight ahead Ernst". After all, Ernst Henne had improved the world speed record for motorcycles over kilometers and miles for the sixth time in 1936 - and it was always over dead straight roads. But Henne could also be very fast on four wheels, which prompted Mercedes team boss Alfred Neubauer to include the "straight-line driver" in his team. However, there were two accidents with the monoposto. When Henne brought a car back to the starting line on June 14, 1936, he delivered a real motorsport sensation. The car bore the white and blue BMW trademark and had the type designation 328. It left the entire competition of the two-liter sports cars behind in the Eifel race, and with its average, it would even have cut a fine figure in the compressor racing car race. The BMW sports car made a convincing debut and was to become the dominant factor in its category in the following three years until the outbreak of war.
