Participation in the classic car event may cost something, but ...
... but participants are only prepared to pay large entry fees to a limited extent. At least this is the result of the evaluation of our last "Question of the Week" on the subject of "How much should participation in classic car events cost? ".
The aim was to find out how much classic car drivers are prepared to pay per event day (excluding hotel, vehicle expenses, meals and other personal expenses). No explicit distinction was made between pure meetings, rallies, tours, concours and historic racing events.
The good news for the event first: 87% of all participating Zwischengas readers are prepared to pay a contribution for participation, with only 13% ruling it out.
Here is one comment: "What annoys me, however, is when I have to pay to attend a "normal" meeting, where anyone can simply park their vehicle for the public to view, while the event is free for visitors. That doesn't work for me. If I have to pay a fiver, that might be okay. But if I have to pull a twenty (or more) out of my wallet just so that I can park my classic car in the official area, I just park my car in a normal visitor parking lot, which is also usually free. But the classic cars are the attraction ..."
And the other 87%? Where is the limit for them? 36%, and thus the largest proportion, are prepared to pay up to 100 euros/CHF per day, with a further 30% going up to 250 euros/CHF per day. 13% would be willing to pay up to 500 euros/CHF per day for an event. But then the air gets thin, because only 6% in total are prepared to pay Euro/CHF 1000 or more.
The costs for the organizers are sometimes considerable, even if they are not immediately apparent. For example, one organizer told us that the police deployment alone for a two-day event cost a five-figure sum, and with 100 participants this already amounts to over Euro/CHF 100 per registration, so the costs add up. What's more, most classic car events are organized as a hobby, not for commercial purposes ...
