Classic pearls of the future - Renault Twingo
07/11/2015
It is already two years since the 20th anniversary of the Renault Twingo was celebrated at the Rétromobile. What, the funny little car with the friendly face is already that old?
In fact, Renault presented the Twingo at the Paris Motor Show back in 1992, which was given an unusual uni-box design by designer Patrick le Quément. The name was intended to suggest its dual use as a small car and minivan.
The front-wheel drive model was sold for 14 years, around 2.42 million units were produced, more than a fifth of which went to Germany alone. Obviously, the French small car had struck a chord here with its well thought-out concept.
It was available with a folding roof, with automatic clutch, with 54, 58 and 60 hp. Thanks to the variable interior design, many types of use were possible. Unfortunately, like many other small cars, the Twingos suffered from rust and many are likely to have fallen victim to the scrappage scheme, with the result that the fleet is constantly shrinking.
However, with its practical orientation and appealing front design, the Twingo I, which is only 3.4 meters long, certainly has what it takes to inspire the classic car buyers of the future, especially the generations that grew up with these cars.
