Can you remember a time when there were no parking beepers? When a sense of proportion was still required? Yes, back then and it wasn't that long ago, maybe 15 years ago. If you wanted to navigate into a tight parking space, you used to open the door to look behind and check the distance to the next vehicle. In the Lamborghini Countach, opening the doors and leaning out was part of the freestyle anyway, otherwise you could hardly reverse.

And in a sports prototype such as the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Daytona, looking over the edge of the door also helps with fine adjustment, as Egon Zweimüller demonstrated at the Schloss Bensberg Classics . With the door closed, you can see almost nothing.

Oh yes, nowadays there are even cars that refuse to continue driving if the door is open ...
