Buying the same car twice
08/08/2014
In the long life of a car driver, there are always vehicle models that were particularly good or that you have unusually fond memories of, which may have been somewhat romanticized over the years. It can happen that you buy the same car again
That's what happened to me with the Mazda MX-5. In 1990, I bought one of the first models to come to Switzerland and enjoyed it for two years until I moved on and switched to another vehicle. 24 years later, the opportunity arose to buy an almost identical car, with a very low mileage and looking almost new. I couldn't resist.
And how romanticized were my memories? Well, the 23-year-old car (built in 1991) actually feels exactly as I had imagined it would. The only difference is that back then the benchmark was a VW Golf or a BMW 320i with just under 100 hp and today the demands have grown considerably thanks to turbodiesel power, assistance systems, air conditioning as standard, dual-clutch gearbox, ABS and ASR and what they are all called. A Mazda MX-5 with 115 hp from a displacement of 1.6 liters is quite modest in comparison, even if it only weighs 950 kg. But none of this detracts from the fun, on the contrary. In the modern era, an MX-5 feels like a true classic and you are delighted with the short gearshifts and crisp handling. The fact that it is also frugal and reliable speaks volumes for the small Japanese fast roadster.
Of course, we also immediately published a vehicle report on the Mazda MX-5 .
